Barefoot, alcohol-free, freeform movement — no steps to learn, no judgement. Here's where to find conscious dance across Cardiff, Swansea and the South Wales valleys.
Ecstatic dance is a sober, conscious movement practice: live DJ or curated music, a dancefloor with no talking and no shoes, and total freedom to move however your body wants. It's part dance, part moving meditation — a way to shake off the week, feel more embodied, and connect with a warm community. Across Cardiff and South Wales the scene is small but genuinely lovely, and growing.
A few of the conscious-dance communities we love in the region — each with its own flavour:
Ecstatic dance on the Gower peninsula and around Swansea, from a co-founder of Ecstatic Dance Wales — barefoot, freeform movement with grounded, coastal soul.

Yes. Ecstatic dance is sober by design — the "high" comes from the music, movement and connection, not drink or substances.
Bare feet keep you grounded and present; a no-talking dancefloor makes it easier to drop out of your head and into your body. Most events have a separate space if you want to chat.
Absolutely — most people do, and these communities are famously warm and welcoming.
An evening of dance is a beautiful taster. A Real Awake weekend is the full immersion — days of ceremony, movement, music, nature and genuine connection with a small group of like-hearted people.
