Plum Village UK is the working name of The Community of Interbeing UK, a registered charity (1096680) and company limited by guarantee. It teaches mindfulness, compassion and ethical living in the Plum Village tradition of Engaged Buddhism, rooted in the teachings of Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, and is part of the wider international Plum Village community whose founding monastery is Plum Village in France. The programme has four strands. Courses: introductory six-week online courses (The Art of Zen), follow-on courses (Looking Deeply, Living Mindfully), and weekend courses at hired venues around the country, with Belper Old School House in Derbyshire and the Mindful Therapies Centre in Newcastle upon Tyne among those used. Retreats: multi-day retreats at their own centre and organised locally across the UK, plus online retreats. Practice groups: many local sanghas across the UK, some meeting in members' homes and some hiring venues, alongside affinity sanghas formed around shared identities or experiences, including LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, neurodiversity, disability, men's, family, climate and Vietnamese groups and one for ages 18 to 35, most of which meet online. There are also daily online meditations each morning and evening. In March 2026 the charity opened its first UK Zen centre, Being Peace, in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, which runs its own retreat programme. The charity's registered office is in Yatton, near Bristol. Retreats follow a set daily rhythm of sitting meditation, mindful movement, a dharma talk, walking meditation, communal meals, deep relaxation and dharma sharing circles, with community work such as arranging the meditation halls and washing up treated as part of the practice. Noble silence is usually observed from the last evening activity until after breakfast; the charity notes there is less silence than on fully silent retreats, so that mindfulness in speaking and listening can be practised. A bursary scheme is offered to UK-resident charity members with at least twelve months of practice, and UK sanghas can register as affiliated to the charity, which brings shared public liability insurance, promotion on its website and support in running a group.
